Portfolio investment includes transactions in shares, bonds and money market instruments (e.g. treasury bills) between residents and non-residents, which are usually traded in organised financial markets or stock exchanges, provided they do not fall under the foreign direct investment category. Repurchase agreements and securities lending are excluded from portfolio investment.
Data on portfolio investment concerning the claims of residents of Cyprus are collected through the Securities Survey which is conducted by the Central Bank of Cyprus. As regards the liabilities of residents of Cyprus, data are collected through the banking system, the Cyprus Stock Exchange, the Ministry of Finance, from investment funds based in Cyprus, the monthly balance sheets of resident banks, as well as the securities database of the European Central Bank (“CSDB”).
