The European Central Bank (ECB) has substantially amended the requirements for collecting and reporting payment statistics. The previous annual reporting requirements, under Regulation (EU) No 1409/2013 of the ECB of 28 November 2013 on payment statistics (ECB/2013/43) have been significantly expanded and the reporting frequency has been increased. In particular, the amended Regulation (EU) 2020/2011 on payment statistics that entered into force on 1 January 2022 covers - inter alia - detailed information on card functions, card accepting devices, fraudulent payment transactions and cross-border card payment transactions broken down by individual merchant category codes and recipient countries. The amended Regulation obliges payment services providers (PSPs) and payment system operators to report payment statistics to the CBC on a quarterly and half-year basis. The CBC subsequently submits to the ECB the statistical data collected.
The statistical data for Cyprus is published at the ECB's Data Portal.
Interactive dashboards on payments statistics were developed and are available in the ECB website.
The CBC publishes on a bi-annual basis a statistical report on Payment Statistics, which provides an overview of the main developments in non-cash payments services used in Cyprus, as well as useful information on the usage of payment cards and terminals by the public. The report is available in English and Greek.
Further to this, the CBC publishes on a bi-annual basis a statistical report on Payment Fraud Statistics, which gives an overview of the fraudulent payment transactions in Cyprus. The report is available in English and Greek.
