CBC Clarifications

Wednesday, 18 September 2013

In response to an article published by a daily newspaper today, the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) would like to clarify the following:

  • The referred document was a draft note prepared by the competent department which aimed at improving the CBC’s relations with the media.
  • Just like any other organisation, the CBC is obliged to examine and evaluate the way the media views its work and activities.
  • The CBC believes in the close collaboration of the authorities with the media, so that citizens can be kept informed in a timely and reliable manner.
  • The CBC does not, under any circumstances, underestimate the competency of the media in Cyprus. This is evident by the comprehensive information it disseminates on the issues for which it is responsible.

The publicity given to the internal document which evaluates and gives suggestions for improving the CBC’s relations with the media is excessive.

The CBC emphasises once again that it will continue to update the media in a responsible manner, since it supports the important role of journalists.
