CBC’s reply to Phileleftheros newspaper

Friday, 22 November 2013

With reference to an article in Phileleftheros newspaper, titled “Recruitments in the CBC”, dated 20 November 2013, the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) announces the following:

-  Following a decision by the Troika, the latest Memorandum of Understanding states that the CBC should be allowed to recruit more staff. It is specifically stated that “the CBC will have sufficient staff to carry out its functions in full independence as stipulated by the Treaties. Legal obstacles to the CBC's ability to retain and employ the necessary qualified staff should be removed”.

-  In the article a reference is made to the vacant posts for three senior directors. There was no relevant statement either by the representatives of the CBC who attended the Finance Committee session on 11 November 2013 or in the related analysis sent by the CBC regarding the posts.

- The CBC is obliged to transfer eighty percent of its net profits (including profits from the ELA) to the Consolidated Fund of the Republic of Cyprus. In 2012 this amounted to €89.261.000.
