Seminar on “Corporate Governance in Financial Institutions” Nicosia 29-30 March, 2007

A seminar on “Corporate Governance in Financial Institutions” was jointly organised by Société Universitaire Européenne de Recherches Financiéres (SUERF) and the Central Bank of Cyprus in Nicosia on the 29th and 30th  March, 2007. 

SUERF is a network association of bankers, central bankers, other practitioners in the financial sector and academics. The focus of the Association is on the analysis, discussion and understanding of financial markets and institutions, monetary policy and related issues. SUERF is strongly supported by central banks in Europe.  Its membership includes 27 central banks of European countries, as well as the European Central Bank and the Bank for International Settlements.

Principal speakers at the seminar included academics from several European universities as well as executives from a number of European banks, the Federal Bank of New York, the International Monetary Fund and Fitch Ratings. Speakers and discussants from Cyprus included Mr Spyros Stavrinakis, Senior Manager, Economic Research and Statistics Division of the Central Bank of Cyprus,  Dr Andreas Charitou, Professor of Accounting and Finance, University of Cyprus, Dr Marios Clerides, Group General Manager, Risk Management, Hellenic Bank Public Co Ltd, Mr Evgenios Evgeniou, Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Mr Costas Tsolakkis, Manager, Bank Supervision and Regulations Department, Central Bank of Cyprus.

The seminar was attended by 61 SUERF members from abroad as well as by several representatives of Cyprus’s broad financial sector, including domestic and international banks operating in Cyprus, co-operative credit institutions, investment firms, insurance companies as well as a large number of public companies listed on the Cyprus Stock Exchange.
